FIELD: electroslag fusing, in particular, bar and sheet rolled product manufacture. SUBSTANCE: bimetal strip has main and protective layers with variable cross section thickness. Thickness of main layer skelp edge exceeds thickness of protective layers adjacent to middle portion of strip by 2-4 times and makes 0.15-0.45 of total skelp thickness. Such strip is produced by cutting bimetal sheet manufactured by rolling preliminarily prepared fused billet. Low-carbon steel billet has periodic section with tapered portions formed as longitudinal channels positioned in spaced relation on slab surface, with space being equal to width of ready strip. Method involves applying protective layer of irregular thickness, with thickness difference being equal to depth of longitudinal channels; rolling and winding to obtain roll; cutting along maximum thickness areas of protective layer extending along channel centers.
