FIELD: foundry, in particular, production of elongate steel billets of section approximating that of ready articles. SUBSTANCE: method involves discharging metal melt 1 from runner 3 in container 1 with liquid metal and repeatedly collecting melt for further hardening. Metal melt 1 is discharged from runner 3 together with metal body 5 having melting temperature approximating that of liquid metal. Metal body 5 is passed through runner 3 and introduced into liquid metal to move within it while gradually cooling liquid metal and catching it at rate equal to that of metal body 5 in boundary layer. Section of metal body 5 corresponds to that of liquid metal defined by discharge runner. Cooling and catching effect created by metal body introduced into liquid melt enables required boundary layer and hardened metal structure to be obtained. Apparatus has runner 3, container 1 with liquid metal and metal body 5 introduced into liquid melt. EFFECT: increased efficiency, simplified method and improved quality of billets. 14 cl, 2 dwg
