FIELD: methods of cleaning of effluent gases from sulfur dioxide; may be used in production of sulfur in metallurgical and other industries for protection of environment from harmful effluents. SUBSTANCE: effluent gases containing sulfur dioxide are partially reduced to H2S by gaseous reducing agent at temperature of 800-1000 C up to attaining in reaction gas mixture of ratio SO2 : H2S = 1:>2. Produced mixture is cooled and subjected to processing into elementary sulfur by passing through aqueous solution of ammonium thiosulfate at pH 6.5-7.0 with supply of air in the presence of catalyst in the form of cobalt sulfophthalocyanide and solution of silicon dioxide in hydrofluoric acid. EFFECT: prevision of 100% recovery of sulfur dioxide from effluent gases. 1 tbl
