FIELD: chemistry.
SUBSTANCE: catalyst is described for reducing sulphur dioxide in industrial gas emissions, containing oxides of transition metals and a carrier. The oxides in the catalyst are MgCr2O4 spinel or mixture of MgCr2O4 and CuCr2O4 spinels, in amount of up to 20 wt %, in the following content, wt %: Cr 3-12; Mg 1.5-3.5; Cu 0.1-1.0, in molar ratio Cu/Mg of 0-0.5; the catalyst contains aluminium oxide or aluminium oxide modified with rare earth elements as the carrier in amount of 1-15 wt %, with the carrier constituting the remaining wt %. A method is described for reducing sulphur dioxide to elementary sulphur in industrial gases in the presence of the above described catalyst and a reducing agent. Gas emissions containing 10-65 vol. % sulphur dioxide are reduced. The method is realised at temperature 650-950°C.
EFFECT: high output of sulphur and conversion of sulphur dioxide when cleaning gas emissions in a wide temperature range.
