FIELD: nonferrous metallurgy. SUBSTANCE: large-size ingots of highly reactive metals and alloys, e. g. titanium ingots are heated at furnace temperature 900-1200 C for 7-15 h without preliminarily treating surface before deformation. As a result, dense dross layer is formed on the surface of ingot, which reliably protects pure metal layers against oxidation by atmospheric gases. EFFECT: reduced effort in surface treatment of ingots and increased their quality. 3 cl, 1 tbl
