FIELD: molecular biology, biotechnology. SUBSTANCE: method involves specific hydroxylation of methyl groups of aromatic 5- or 6-membered heterocycles to the corresponding pure hydroxymethylated derivatives that can not catabolize further and preparing recombinant plasmid DNAs encoding synthesis of xylene monooxygenase for hydroxylation of methyl groups of the indicated heterocycles, and strains of bacterium Escherichia coli and Pseudomonas putida containing these plasmids. Method involves the use of strains of bacteria containing recombinant plasmids pL04 and pL05 that contain gene encoding xylene monooxygenase TOL-plasmid of Pseudomonas putida. The indicated strains do not produce an active alcohol dehydrogenase. The produced hydroxymethylated heterocycles can be used in pharmacy and agrochemistry.
