Genes present as a single transcription unit and located at the following order: bco C encoding γ-butyrobetaine-CoA dehydrogenase, bco A/B encoding γ-butyrobetaine/crotono-betaine-CoA synthetase and bco D encoding crotonobetaine-CoA hydrolase. Fragment can comprise the gene bco T encoding the potential transport protein. Expression vectors are p VK 100q, p VK 101, pAZ 101, pAZ 7, pAZ 7::beu, pL 041. Recombinant strains Rhizobium/Agrobacterium HK 1349 transformed with the corresponding expression vectors are producers of L-carnitine.
