FIELD: ferrous metallurgy. SUBSTANCE: invention relates to extra- furnace steel treatment using arc heating in ladle. Metal in ladle is heated by electrodes with axial channel through which hydrocarbon gas-neutral gas mixture is fed into arc zone. One determines content of admixed oxygen in gas mixture, finds minimum hydrocarbon gas intake in dependence on content of admixed oxygen in gas mixture, and content of hydrocarbon gas in mixture is increased in direct proportion to allowed maximum content of hydrogen in steel. Minimum hydrocarbon gas intake in mixture is found from relationship: M = (0.3-0.5)H where M is minimum hydrocarbon gas consumption, cu.m/h, H oxygen content in gas mixture, %, and (0.3-0.5) empirical coefficient taking into account carbon atom content in hydrocarbon gas molecule, cu.m/h. Thereafter, content of hydrocarbon gas in gas mixture is increased to 10.0%; content of hydrocarbon gas in gas mixture is increased from 10.1 to 95.0%; and then evacuation of steel in ladle is performed.
