FIELD: mechanical engineering; welding; deposition of metal on metal plate surface for strengthening or fusion cladding. SUBSTANCE: method comes to the following: plate is arranged longitudinally and metal layer is deposited on its surface by reciprocating motion of group of welding heads across metal surface moving longitudinally. Slight convexity is made on metal plate passing under welding heads by means of unit placed under plate to provide accurate positioning of plate relative to welding heads. Metal plate 10 passes through installation in which welding heads 43 are mounted. Welding heads are provided with welding electrodes 49. Slight convexity is made on metal plate in area of welding head to maintain preset distance between welding electrode and metal plate surface. Convexity is formed by wheel unit 31 which can be provided with cooling devices 38. Wheel unit is arranged under plate.
