FIELD: ferrous metallurgy. SUBSTANCE: protection effect is achieved by feeding several jets of inert gas onto metal jet when metal is tapped out of steel-smelting assembly into steel-casting ladle. Inert gas is directed simultaneously into upper part of metal jet in the region from where metal flows down and into lower part of metal jet in the region of its contact with smelted metal mirror in ladle. Total intake of inert gas is determined from relationship: QPat /F1,2•P = (50...1000), where Q is total intake of inert gas in two regions, normal cu.m/min; F1,2 summary open flow area of gas-supply pipes on upper and lower parts of metal jet, sq.m; Patm atmosphere pressure, kg/sq.cm; P pressure of inert gas in gas-supply pipes, kg/sq. cm; (50...1000) is empirical coefficient characterizing hydrodynamic regularities in distribution of gas round the perimeter and along the length of metal jet, m/min. Ratio of summary open flow areas of gas- supply pipes taken separately on upper and lower parts of metal jet ranges from 1 to 8. EFFECT: improved quality of cast metal and ingots. 1 tbl
