FIELD: measurement technology, checking level of water in reservoirs of water supply systems. SUBSTANCE: autocirculation of acoustic pulses probing tested distance is organized to form first sequence of information pulses, autocirculation of acoustic pulses probing distance equal to sum of base and tested distance is also organized to form second sequence of information pulses. Tested distance is found by number of information pulses of second sequence registered within time interval between two moments of simultaneous formation of information pulses of correspondingly of first and second sequences. Device for implementation of method includes acoustic sensor incorporating two ultrasonic converters which first rays of double-ray radiation pattern are oriented along direction top tested object and which second rays-in directions opposite to each other with positioning of converters along tested distance with displacement relative to one another equal to base distance. It also has electronic unit for formation of output signal composed of two circuits of autocirculation of probing pulses, logic AND gate and electron counter. Acoustic sensor can be located on vertical pipe union of reservoir with checked liquid and can be made in the form of two pipes having vertical sections equal in length and horizontal sections different in length by value of base distance. Ultrasonic converters can be manufactured in the from of cylinder, each one mounted on wall of horizontal section of pipe at equal distances from their ends. Vertical section of pipes are fitted with floats, each one placed into one pipe connected to reservoir through end face of horizontal section of pipe.
