SUBSTANCE: method involves forming matrix defined by depressions in surface of gravure cylinder; filling depressions with ink; removing ink from depressions, which do not form pattern to be reproduced; transferring ink from depressions forming pattern onto carrier. Printing apparatus has device for filling all matrix depressions with ink and device for withdrawing ink from depressions which do not form pattern to be reproduced. EFFECT: increased efficiency, simplified construction and improved reproduction of patterns. 5 cl, 4 dwg
