FIELD: mechanical engineering; starting of piston-type internal combustion engines. SUBSTANCE: during the first stage of string, when cranking the engine, fuel delivery into engine combustion chambers is blocked for preset number of revolutions, as a result air is compressed in engine to warm up combustion chambers by heat generated at compression. During the second stage of starting, with engine still cranked, fuel is delivered into cylinders until it gets ignited. During the first stage throttling of exhaust is carried out additionally to build up backpressure in exhaust system. Device for implementing the proposed method has engine cranking starter and control unit which is made to supply control signal blocking fuel delivery into engine cylinders during preset number of revolutions of engine crankshaft and to interrupt blocking during the second stage of starting. Device has throttling unit in engine exhaust system. Control unit is made for holding throttling unit in throttling position to created backpressure in exhaust system during first stage of starting, when the engine is being cranked.
