FIELD: catalysts for sulfur production. SUBSTANCE: catalyst is composed of 1-10 wt % calcium carbonate and 90-99 wt % of solid solution of titanium and rare-earth element (E) oxides with general formula (TiEx)O2+1.5x where 0.174 ≥ x ≥ 0.027. Catalyst is prepared by simultaneously treating titanium tetrachloride and rare-earth element chlorides with aqueous solution or suspension of alkali agent to which calcium carbonate is added in a specified proportion followed by separation of precipitate, its washing out from calcium chloride, separation of catalyst mass by filtration, shaping, drying, calcination, and pelletization. EFFECT: increased catalyst activity, simplified preparation procedure, and eliminated nitrogen oxide release into atmosphere. 2 cl, 1 tbl
