FIELD: railway track repair and maintenance machinery and equipment. SUBSTANCE: ballast tamping machine has tool holders which are arranged successively one after another in longitudinal direction of railway track and they can be displaced vertically independently from each other. Tool holders carry tamping tools in the form of tamping picks which during operation are being sunken in ballast towards each other in longitudinal direction of railway track for tamping ballast under sleepers by means of sinking power drive. First tool holder is provided with three tamping tools subsequently located one after another in longitudinal direction as to machine frame. Second tool holder has two tamping tools arranged subsequently one after another in longitudinal direction as to machine frame. At least one sinking power drive of tamping tool adjacent to first tamping tool and arranged on second tool holder is adapted for initial sinking motion of both tamping tools in direction towards each other and for second sinking motion in direction away from each other. EFFECT: higher efficiency. 5 cl, 5 dwg
