FIELD: metallurgy, more specifically, steel melting in converter. SUBSTANCE: the offered method includes charging of metal scrap into converter, pouring of pig iron thereto, oxygen blowing of melt through top water-cooled lance, supply into converter of slag-forming materials in form of lime, dolomite and solid converter slag, and changing in course of blowing of the height of lance position relative to bath melt level in steady state. During the first period of melt blowing, lance is set at height H1 above melt level equalling 50-65 calibers of lance nozzles. Upon elapsing 0.2-0.4 of total blowing time, lance is lowered to height H2 determined by relation offered in the invention description, and lance is held at height H2 for 0.5-0.7 of total blowing time, then, lance is lowered to height H3 determined by relation H3 = (0.15-0.7)(H1-H2) and lance is held at this height until end of blowing. EFFECT: higher productivity of steel melting in converter, increased stability of converter lining, reduced splashing of molten metal and increased yield of liquid steel. 3 cl, 1 tbl
