FIELD: solid-state instruments for communication, radio electronic, and medical equipment. SUBSTANCE: oscillator incorporating active element converting energy of DC voltage source into electromagnetic waves has resonance-tuned tunnel structure with negative differential conductivity section on its current-voltage characteristic. Resonance-tuned tunnel structure is placed on conducting substrate and has resonance-tuned conductivity region. Connected to the latter and to conducting substrate through ohmic contacts is DC voltage source. Oscillator passive circuit is electromagnetic wave resonator in the form of substrate conducting layer. Shortest distance between substrate conducting layer contact and resonance-tuned conductivity region is greater than ratio of substrate conducting layer conductivity to absolute value of ratio of current density difference to voltage difference at extremum points on current-voltage characteristic of resonance-tuned conductivity region.
