FIELD: sugar industry. SUBSTANCE: method consists in substituting calcium and/or magnesium ions in sugar-containing solution by sodium and/or potassium ions when in contact with cation-exchange resin. Resin is then reactivated by fraction obtained in chromatographic sugar isolation process and containing highest amount sodium and/or potassium ions. Softened sugar-containing solution is subjected to chromatographic separation on ion-exchange resin into two fractions, one of them being enriched with sugar and the other with sodium and/or potassium ions. The latter is utilized for resin reactivation. Plant is provided with means to connect pipeline for feeding reactivating solution into column with pipeline for withdrawing sodium and/or potassium enriched fraction leaving chromatographic column.
