FIELD: chemical industry, more specifically cooling agent and also semiproduct in the synthesis of organofluorine compounds, and solvent in polymerization processes. SUBSTANCE: in order to prepare hexafluoroethane, tetrafluoroethylene is directly fluorinated with elementary fluorine at low temperature from minus 56 to minus 62 C in inert perfluorinated liquid containing from 8 to 11 wt % stable tetraperfluoromethyl-2-pentafluoroethyldifluoropropyl radical. Fluorine is added with or without diluent. Fluorine to tetrafluoroethylene ratio is 1:(1-1.1) mol. Yield of the final product is more than 80%.
