FIELD: drilling winches. SUBSTANCE: device has cooling units located on leading and trailing runs of brake band with friction linings. Device is also provided with thermal tube located over entire length of brake band on its non-working surface and connected with above-mentioned cooling units for removal of heat from cooling units. Cooling units are made in form of thermal batteries consisting of thermal elements with electronic and hole-type conduction; thermal elements are made in form of rods mounted in body of friction linings and passed through holes in brake band. Method of cooling the band-and-shoe brake consists in connecting the thermal element of electron conduction on leading run of brake band to positive terminal of DC source and connecting the thermal element of hole-type conduction to negative terminal of DC source for increase of current intensity of thermoelectric refrigerator generated by thermoelectric generators. EFFECT: enhanced durability of brake friction pairs. 4 cl, 5 dwg
