FIELD: mechanical engineering. SUBSTANCE: system may be used in drum-shoe brakes of vehicles and road and building machines. Cooling system has moving brake linings of width equal to interrib space of brake shoe and thickness which is 2.0-2.5 times as large as stationary brake linings of shoes. Stationary brake linings include cooling assemblies in form of thermopiles. Moving brake linings interact constantly with operating surface of brake drum at any degree of drum thermal load. Laminated thermocouples with leads shaped as thermal electrodes which serve as thermal electric generators are installed in moving brake linings along their length at depth of permissible wear. Method of cooling of drum-shoe brake in closed state includes connection of thermal electrodes of each of laminated thermocouples through current regulator to cold joints of first and last thermal elements of thermopile operating as thermal electric refrigerator. When brake is open thermopiles are connected to direct-current circuit, and they operate as thermal electric refrigerator. Operation o thermopiles in modes of thermal electric generator and thermal electric refrigerator within time interval between braking operations promotes intensive forced cooling of brake friction assembles in all modes of motion.
