FIELD: manufacture of colorants, medicinals and other organic products. SUBSTANCE: acetyl chloride is prepared by reacting acetic acid with benzal chloride or stillage residues which result from benzyl chloride production and contain at least 38% of benzal chloride. Process is carried out at 90-125 C for 5.0-8.0 hours in the presence of 0.15-0.4 wt % of aluminium chloride, ferric chloride or zinc chloride. Final product is isolated by distillation.
