FIELD: study of mechanical properties of materials. SUBSTANCE: indentation mechanism, indenter and indicator of clock type are used to realize invention. With forcing of indenter into surface of tested material indicator measures depth of its indentation. After achievement of specified indentation depth indenter is moved horizontally. In this case displacement force and depth of formed scratch are recorded without interruption. Displacement is stopped when given effort grows maximum. Mechanical characteristics of material are determined by value of this force and length of scratch.
