FIELD: organic chemistry and technology. SUBSTANCE: 5-aminolevulinic acid hydrochloride is synthesized from 5-nitrolevulinic acid methyl ester by its catalytic hydrogenation on catalyst 5% Pd/C, at 5-30 C, under hydrogen pressure 10-20 at, in medium of lower alcohols, in the presence of hydrochloric acid. This method shows technological effectiveness, provides rather high yield of the end substance (up to 88.5%) of good quality (melting point at 147-149 C). Method is perspective for industrial-scale production. 5-Amino-levulinic acid is used for photodiagnosis and photodynamic therapy of malignant tumors of different localization and for treatment of patients with dermatosis of nontumor nature. Also, 5-aminolevulinic acid can be used as plant growth stimulating agent, herbicide and for other aims. EFFECT: improved method of synthesis, high yield, good quality. 1 tbl, 11 ex
