FIELD: machine building, more particularly manufacture of brake cover plates and shoes for disk and drum brakes. SUBSTANCE: composition comprises phenol-formaldehyde resin, butadiene-nitrile rubber, ultrathin steel fiber, powder-like alloy of zinc and magnesium, carbon filler, brass chip or copper powder, and barium sulfate. Carbon is product of impregnation of solid carbon-containing material with aqueous solution of mixture of transition metal and alkali or alkaline-earth metal salts at molar ratios thereof (80-98): (1-10): (1-10), respectively, said carbon filler being heat treated at temperature rising from room temperature to 200 C, and calcium oxide. Ratios of composition components are as follows, wt %: phenol-formaldehyde resin, 5-12; butadiene-nitrile rubber, 2-4; ultrathin steel fiber 20-50; powder-like alloy of zinc and magnesium, 1-6; said carbon filler, 5- 20; brass chip or copper powder, 5-7; calcium oxide, 1-5; barium sulfate, up to 100.
