FIELD: machine engineering, namely working by means of abrasive wheels in different metal working plants, especially in conditions of automated manufacturing process. SUBSTANCE: method comprises steps of registering amplitude of acoustic signal corresponding to first layer of abrasive material removed at dressing; performing second dressing stage with the same depth and determining amplitude ratio for previous and successive dressing steps; comparing ratio value with predetermined limit value and if it is more than said limit value reducing by 3-4 times ( in comparison with initial value) depth of removed layer of abrasive material at next dressing steps until amplitude of acoustic signal is less than amplitude of acoustic signal of first dressing step or equal to it; then performing dwelling of grinding wheel. EFFECT: enhanced efficiency of dressing process, reduced consumption of grinding wheels and dressing tool at predetermined effectiveness of grinding process and quality of ground parts. 2 dwg, 1 tbl
