FIELD: special electric metallurgy, production of high-quality ingots of metals and alloys. SUBSTANCE: given process includes joining of consumable electrode to holder anchored on rod of mechanism for electrode movement, initiation of arc, melting of consumable electrode into crucible with skull with undermelting of part of consumable electrode. Consumable electrode is melted to length of undermelted part equal to not less than 5.0 cm and after 6 min as minimum after termination of casting holder with undermelted part of consumable electrode is lowered into crucible and arc is initiated between undermelted part of consumable electrode and bottom of skull in crucible. Undermelted part of consumable electrode is melted down to bottom of skull. Process makes it feasible to increase output of good articles due to prevention of spoilage caused by fall of part of consumable electrode into melt and to reduce labor input into processing of waste, build-up and manufacture of holders of consumable electrodes owing to prolongation of their service life. EFFECT: increased output of good articles.
