FIELD: non-ferrous metallurgy. SUBSTANCE: invention specifically refers to production of high-quality copper with relation of specific resistance ρ at temperatures 293 K and 4.2 K/ρ 293 K/ρ 4.2 K>200 by process of vacuum arc melting. Proposed process includes melting of copper cathodes in graphite melting pot by non-consumable electrode under specific power of electric arc chosen within limits from 4.106 to 6.106 W/sq m of internal cross-section of melting pot in the course of time which duration is found by expression: 8.1 cth/10-9 q/≤τ≤ 8.9 cth/10-9 q, where cth is function of hyperbolic cotangent; τ is duration of melting, s; q is specific power of electric arc, W/sq m. Process provides for production of high-quality copper intended for manufacture of rolled products and tubes for electrical engineering, manufacture of superconductors included. EFFECT: improved efficiency of production of high-quality copper. 3 tbl
