FIELD: automotive industry. SUBSTANCE: proposed drive unit has internal combustion engine, hydrodynamic retarder-brake including stator, rotor and housing, and engine cooling system with fan. Retarder-brake in axial section is arranged inside space limited from three sides by end face surface of crankcase pointed to retarder-brake, by fan shaft parallel to engine shaft and by rear edge of impeller. Retarder-brake is placed at front mainly inside trajectory of rotation of fan impeller. Retarder brake rotor is made cantilever mounting on engine shaft or on end journal coaxial with shaft. EFFECT: reduced axial dimensions and weight.
