FIELD: mechanical engineering. SUBSTANCE: invention is designed for use as means for decreasing speed of heavy loaded vehicles, especially at long braking or under heavy road condition and/or changing speed of stationary plant shafts under sharply operating conditions. Said drive unit contains engine, gearbox and hydrodynamic retarder including rotor blade wheel and stator blade wheel. Engine and gearbox are installed in main drive transmission. Rotor blade wheel of hydrodynamic retarder is set into operation from main drive transmission, hydrodynamic retarder being installed in auxiliary line of main drive transmission in gearbox case, or as independent unit behind gearbox. Novelty is that working liquid of hydrodynamic retarder is used for engine cooling, housing of rotor blade wheel rests on gearbox case, and shaft of rotor blade wheel rests through bearings on gearbox case and on rotor blade wheel housing. EFFECT: reduced costs of retarder cooling and when necessary, cooling additional sets of corresponding stationary or movable plant. 9 cl, 3 dwg
