FIELD: estimating origination of large-scale diastrophism such as earth-quake. SUBSTANCE: very high frequency of radio wave propagating over distance beyond direct vision through region of abnormal distribution of plasma density formed for the time being in ionosphere during diastrophism, such as earthquake, is identified as abnormal propagation. Position of diastrophism under region of abnormal plasma density distribution is evaluated while recording mentioned abnormal propagation. Amount and time of diastrophism are estimated. Provision is made for eliminating impact of natural and artificial noise on measurement results. EFFECT: improved accuracy, simplified design and reduced cost of equipment. 8 cl, 15 dwg
