FIELD: chemical and mining and processing industry. SUBSTANCE: method involves heating chemigenous potassium rock schungite III and/or II species exhibiting value of alumina-ferroginous modulus (Al2O3 + FeO + Fe2O3)/C 0.2, not above, where C, Al2O3, FeO and Fe2O3 mean content of carbon and aluminum and iron oxides in schungite rock in vacuum electric furnace to 1900-2100 K at the rate 200-300 K/h under pressure 300-1100 Pa followed by exposition at this temperature for 1 h. The yield of silicon beta-carbide is 80-98%. Invention can be used in production of ceramic heat-resistant and abrasive articles. EFFECT: simplified method, decreased cost of raw, economy of method. 2 cl
