FIELD: transport engineering; steering systems. SUBSTANCE: proposed steering mechanism has case with coaxially arranged screw and piston mechanically coupled by means of ball-and-screw drive. Toothed rack made on piston forms rack drive with gear sector of pitman arm shaft. Section of pitman arm in vertical plane passing through screw axis has the shape of round sector whose center lies on axis of rotation of pitman arm shaft. Radius of sector is equal to radius of circumference of gear sector teeth tops. Size of sector central angle α is found from equation α = 180°-θ where θ is round angle of turning of pitman arm shaft. EFFECT: increased area of cross-section of pitman arm shaft without increasing overall dimensions of steering mechanism. 2 dwg
