FIELD: electrochemical methods of examination of materials. SUBSTANCE: probe filled with electrolyte and carrying reference electrode is brought in contact with examined article made of metal or alloy, short-time polarizing pulse is fed between examined article and reference electrode and potential on examined article is measured. Potential is measured on examined article with use of comparison electrode located in probe filled with electrolyte at preset moment within duration of polarizing pulse and then after specified time on termination of polarizing pulse determined in advance. Metal or alloy of examined article is later identified by results of above-mentioned measurement. Invention also proposes device for implementation of process described above. EFFECT: possibility of identification of any metals or alloys with high accuracy. 11 cl, 3 dwg
