FIELD: metal working, wood working, paper and pulp industry branches, namely, cutting tools with increased wear resistance. SUBSTANCE: method comprise steps of forming in tool material magnetostrictive compression stresses with the aid of magnetic field; setting intensity value of magnetic field more than magnetic saturation degree of tool material; orienting vector of magnetostrictive compression stresses normally relative to plane of propagation of cracking corresponding to deformation type of cutting portion of tool; providing continuously acting magnetic field. Due to providing normalized level of magnetostrictive compression stresses in cutting tool, averaged wear resistance of tool increases by 15-25% in comparison with its value achieved at using well known methods. EFFECT: improved wear resistance of cutting tool due to formation in wear zone of tool optimal (favorable) set of mechanical and tribological characteristics. 2 cl, 2 dwg, 2 tbl
