FIELD: mechanical engineering. SUBSTANCE: method involves preparing mixture of powder oxides of alkaline-earth metals, such as magnesium oxide used in an amount of 5.0-10.0 wt%, oxides of transition metals such as chromium oxide used in an amount of 15.0-20.0 wt%, titanium oxide (IV) used in an amount of 10.0-20.0 wt%; drying oxide mixture and mixing with binder such as water glass having modulus of 2.6-3.0; applying produced silicate composition to steel samples, which are placed in thermostat and initially held at temperature of 100 C with following holding at temperature of 300 C; withdrawing samples from thermostat and testing for quality assurance. Such composition provides manufacture of coating possessing increased fire-resistance, wet strength, improved adhesiveness to metals, and strength and is used for protecting metal construction surfaces. EFFECT: increased efficiency of silicate coating and improved protection of metal construction surfaces. 1 tbl
