FIELD: manufacture of carbon electrodes. SUBSTANCE: process metal jacket containing unbaked carbon electrode paste that includes carbon material with hard particles and carbon binder is passed practically continuously downwards through furnace for baking. Furnace is heated up to temperature from 500 to 1200 C so that unbaked electrode paste bakes into monolithic carbon article. Jacket is lengthened by joining new sections of jacket to top of jacket as jacket passes through furnace for baking. Lower part of each section of jacket has outer diameter equal or smaller than inner diameter of upper part of each section of jacket. Each new section of jacket is so put on section of jacket located beneath that lower part of new section of jacket is positioned inside jacket of upper part of section of jacket located beneath new section of jacket and where length of lower part of each section of jacket has such extent that new section of jacket can freely slide downwards with reference to section of jacket placed beneath new section of jacket by distance which compensates shrinkage of electrode paste located in jacket in process of baking of carbon article in furnace for baking.
