FIELD: methods of steel melting in open-hearth and electric steel melting furnaces and converters; applicable in metallurgical works. SUBSTANCE: method includes charging of steel scrap and its covering with material containing iron oxides in the form of oiled scale mixed with coke breeze and lime in ratio 1:(0.3-3):(0.1-1), respectively. Then lime is charged as slag forming material, coke breeze as carburizing agent, and iron charge. After that, heat is worked. Use of preliminarily prepared mixture provides for earlier slag formation and production of liquid melt, higher degree of iron reduction. EFFECT: higher product yield, reduced heat time, pig iron and fuel consumption, utilized oiled scale. 1 tbl
