FIELD: gas treatment catalysts. SUBSTANCE: invention relates to removal of nitrogen oxides from both dry and wet sulfur-containing gases with the aid of C12-C16-hydrocarbons under oxidation conditions. Catalyst involved in this process represents composition depicted as n Me1 m Me2O p SOx/support, wherein Me1 denotes precious metal, Me2O transition metal oxide, SOx adsorbed sulfur oxide, n does not exceed 3.0, m does not exceed 6.0, p does not exceed 2.0 (on conversion to sulfur), and support is columnar clay including columns of nanoparticles based on (i) zirconium oxide, in amount 15-30 wt.%, depicted by formula x Me3O/ZrO2, wherein Me3O denotes oxide of aluminum, iron, cerium, copper, or their mixture and x = 0 to 4.0, or (ii) alumina, in amount 15-20 wt.%, having interlayer distance no larger than 10A, total volume of meso- and micropores no larger than 0.25 cu.cm/g, and specific surface 200-370 sq.m/g. Catalyst is prepared by ion exchange, photodeposition, or impregnation. Emission gases are cleaned using above-described catalyst in oxidative atmosphere at 180 to 560 C via catalytic reduction with hydrocarbons.
