FIELD: chemical technology. SUBSTANCE: invention relates to catalysts and methods for preparing nitrous oxide (N2O) by oxidation of ammonia with oxygen or oxygen-containing gas. Invention describes a catalyst and method for preparing nitrous oxide by oxidation of ammonia with oxygen or oxygen-containing gas that involves manganese- -containing active component and oxide or mixture of oxides of alkaline- -earth metal. Catalyst comprises the composition as an active component representing mixed amorphous form of the following non- stoichiometric composite: MnRxOy (0.05 ≤ x ≤ 2.24; 2.08 ≤ y ≤ 5.36) wherein R is bismuth and/or lanthanides, or mixture of amorphous oxide phase of the composite: MnRxOy and crystalline manganese- containing phase. Invention relates also to the process for preparing nitrous oxide by oxidation of ammonia with oxygen or oxygen-containing gas in the presence of manganese- containing catalyst of the above said composite that is carried out at temperature 250-450 C. Invention provides preparing active catalyst showing selectivity with respect to nitrous oxide with reduced content of active component. Nitrous oxide is used widely in different branches of industry: in semiconductive, perfume, medicinal and food industries.
