SUBSTANCE: invention relates to catalysts and methods for preparing nitrous oxide (N2O) by oxidation of ammonia with oxygen or oxygen-containing gas. Invention solves the problem for preparing active and selective with respect to N2O catalyst with reduced content of active component. Invention describes catalyst and method for preparing nitrous oxide by oxidation of ammonia with oxygen or oxygen-containing gas including manganese-containing active component and oxide or mixture of oxides of alkali-earth metals. Catalyst comprises as an active component the composition representing mixed amorphous oxide phase of non-stoichiometric composition MnBixOy (0.05 ≤ x ≤ 2.24; 2.08 ≤ y ≤ 5.36) or mixture of amorphous phase MnBixOy of crystalline manganese-containing phase. Process for preparing nitrous oxide by oxidation of ammonia with oxygen or oxygen-containing gas is carried out in the presence of manganese-containing catalyst of above indicated composition is carried out at temperature 250-450 C. Invention provides preparing active and selective with respect to nitrous oxide catalyst with reduced content of active component.
