FIELD: ferrous metallurgy; making steel in oxygen converters. SUBSTANCE: proposed method includes loading metal scrap and lime, pouring cast iron, blowing bath with gaseous oxidant and introducing slag-forming materials containing magnesium and calcium oxides. Used as one of slag-forming materials containing magnesium oxide is periclase coarse-grained powder PPK-75; consumption of this powder is determined form the following formula: Gp.p = 0,01ΣGi•(CaO)i/3-ΣGi•(MgO)i/(MgO)p.p, where Gp.p is mass of periclase coarse-grained powder, t/melt; Gi is mass of slag-forming material, t; (CaO)i is content of calcium oxide in slag-forming material, %; (MgO)i is content of magnesium oxide in slag-forming material, %; (MgO)p.p is content of magnesium oxide in periclase powder, %. Adverse action of slag on converter lining is reduced due to properly calculated consumption of periclase powder, thus increasing resistance by 10% (abs). EFFECT: enhanced efficiency. 1 tbl
