FIELD: ferrous metallurgy. SUBSTANCE: method involves heating and roasting slag forming component mixture in rotating furnace; cooling resultant flux. Slag forming mixture components are dolomite and iron oxide. Weight ratio of dolomite and iron oxide is 8:1, ratio of their fraction sizes is (40-50): 1, respectively. Mixture roasting is carried out at natural gas flame temperature of 1,570-1,670 C. Roll scale, iron ore and like materials may be used as iron oxide. Magnesian flux comprises slag forming mixture components in the form of magnesium, aluminum, iron, silicon and calcium oxides. Iron-plated dolomite comprising, wt%: MgO 32.0-33.5; A12O3 0.5-0.95; Fe2O3 2.0-5.0; SiO2 2.5-3.0; CaO the balance, is used as slag forming component mixture. Flux has mineral composition, wt%: magnesia 30-32; calcium oxide 45-47; alite 8-10; brown millerite 3-4; dicalcium ferrite 3-4. Method is used for obtaining magnesian flux utilized for intensifying slag formation process during cast iron conversion process in converter. EFFECT: reduced power consumption, improved slag forming process and increased refining properties of slag, reduced wear of lining by applying high-quality lining slag onto converter liner due to optimal fluidity of slag. 5 cl, 4 tbl
