FIELD: carbon materials. SUBSTANCE: activated carbon, which can be used in a variety carbon-adsorption processes (refining of distillery beverages, drinking water, and in pharmaceutical and food industry) and also for recuperation of volatile solvents, is manufactured from charcoal. Crude material is crushed and allowed to oxidize in air for 40- 60 min at 25-40 C, whereupon oxidized particles are subjected to heat treatment to 800-850 C at temperature rise velocity 1.5-8.0 C/min and activated with steam at 850-860 C. Resulting activated carbon is particularly suitable for freeing drinking water of middle-molecular weight organic impurities such as acetic acid imparting unpleasant smell to water. EFFECT: increased yield of activated carbon and enhanced its drinking water treatment efficiency. 3 ex
