FIELD: mechanical engineering. SUBSTANCE: pipe line is provided with device for periodic measurement of flow velocity in preset area of its cross section; this device is provided with measuring line connected with total pressure and static pressure lines and electronic unit. Two ultrasonic transducers mounted in protective casing along measuring line at preset distance from each other work in acoustic signal radiation and reception modes. At the beginning of first cycle of measurement, sequence of standard pulses at preset repetition period is formed. Standard pulse repetition frequency is indicative of instantaneous flow rate. Electronic unit includes standard pulse generator, two sounding impulse generators, two amplifiers, four rectifiers, four diodes, nine electronic switches, three AND-gates and recording and indicating circuit. Proposed method makes it possible to record error stipulated by dependence of rate of propagation of acoustic signals versus temperature of water. EFFECT: increased resolving power. 3 cl, 4 dwg
