FIELD: inorganic chemistry, chemical technology. SUBSTANCE: invention relates to technology for preparing tungsten hexafluoride from metallic tungsten and can be used in regeneration of tungsten from tungsten scrap. Metallic tungsten is fluorinated with elemental fluorine at elevated temperature. Process is carried out at the linear fluorine rate feeding in the reaction zone 0.1-0.5 cm/s up to residual tungsten content, as %, that at least equal to 50-fold value of linear fluorine rate feeding measured as cm/s. Method provides 99.9% utilization of fluorine. EFFECT: improved preparing method. 1 tbl
