FIELD: metallurgy. SUBSTANCE: cylinder block is manufactured from light alloy obtained from aluminum-base matrix alloy with finely-dispersed surface layer comprising silicon. Finely-dispersed surface layer includes uniformly dispersed round primary silicon grains having average diameter of 1-10 micron and used in an amount of 5-20%, AlSi eutectic 10-14%, alloy components the balance, with minimal surface of 160 HV. Method involves depositing silicon powder on cylinder surface and exposing said surface to laser beam, with laser beam and silicon powder, supplied in the form of flow, being directed in parallel with one another; directing laser beam transverse to direction of feeding of matrix surface, with width of laser beam being selected on condition that it provides heating of powder to melting temperature and diffusion thereof only at point, where laser beam falls onto matrix surface. Apparatus has powder conveying pipeline and laser beam source arranged in parallel with one another radially and axially of hollow cylinder, and focusing system with deflecting mirror. Cylinder block is free from defective portions and oxide inclusions. EFFECT: increased wear resistance and tribologically optimized working surfaces of cylinders. 18 cl, 4 dwg
