FIELD: mechanical engineering. SUBSTANCE: invention relates to ignition systems of internal combustion engines and it can be used in power-generating plants with forced ignition of working mixture. Proposed device for ignition of working mixture in cylinder of internal combustion engine contains synchronizing unit coupled by electric circuit with engine crankshaft position pickup, laser pumping power amplifier coupled with working mixture content pickup and synchronizing unit, semiconductor laser coupled through light guide with cylinder space. Moreover, device is furnished with ignition source made in form of laser-spark plug installed in engine cylinder block head and coupled with spark ignition system, laser heating pulse shaper coupled with laser pumping power amplifier and synchronizing unit and mixture content pickup connected with laser pumping power amplifier. Proposed method comes to the following: working mixture in engine cylinder space is heated by energy of laser radiation source. Working mixture is heated in spark plug inter-electrode space at end of compression stroke, is fired additionally by spark discharge, and intensity of laser radiation is regulated to suit engine operating conditions. Heating of working mixture in inter-electrode space provides steady sparking at relatively low voltage (10-15 kV). Invention makes it possible to create laser-spark ignition system featuring high energy characteristics of ignition of working mixture.
