FIELD: chemical technology, catalysts. SUBSTANCE: invention relates to catalysts and methods for preparing nitrous oxide (N2O) by oxidation of ammonia with oxygen or oxygen-containing gas. Invention describes a catalyst and method for preparing nitrous oxide by oxidation of ammonia with oxygen or oxygen-containing gas that involves manganese-containing active component, iron oxide, lanthanum oxide, alkaline-earth metal oxides or mixture of oxides. Catalyst comprises the composition as active component representing mixed amorphous oxide phase of the following non- stoichiometric composite: MnBixOy (0.05 ≤ x ≤ 2.24, 2.08 ≤ y ≤ 5.36) or mixture of amorphous oxide phase of the composite: MnBixOy and crystalline manganese-containing phase. Invention relates also to process for preparing nitrous oxide by oxidation of ammonia with oxygen or oxygen-containing gas in the presence of manganese-containing catalyst of the above said composite that is carried out at temperature 250-450 C. Invention provides preparing an active catalyst showing selectivity with respect to nitrous oxide with reduced content of an active component. Nitrous oxide is used widely in different branches of industry: in semiconductive, perfume, medicinal and food industries.
