FIELD: industrial inorganic synthesis and catalysts. SUBSTANCE: invention provides catalyst and method for production of nitrous oxide via oxidation of ammonia with oxygen or oxygen-containing gas. Catalyst comprises manganese-containing active component, alkali-earth metal oxide, and alumina, manganese-containing said active, more specifically, being a mixed amorphous oxide phase by empirical formula MnRxOy (0.05 ≤x≤ 2.24; 2.08 ≤y≤ 5.36), where R is bismuth and/or lanthanoid, or mixture of MnRxOy and crystalline manganese-containing phase. Oxidation pf ammonia with oxygen or oxygen- containing gas in presence of indicated catalyst is carried out at 250 to 450 C. EFFECT: reduced content of active component. 7 cl, 1 tbl, 13 ex
